8.3 – Law Enforcement Officer Training
Standard: Law enforcement officers with the authority to enforce laws within areas and facilities under the jurisdiction of the agency must have proper training in order to carry out their roles and responsibilities.
Suggested Evidence of Compliance: Provide a summary of the current training program for law enforcement officers having jurisdiction within the parks and recreation agency, including provision for refreshers and updates.
Narrative:
The Westchester County Department of Public Safety (DOP) is responsible for law enforcement activities for PRC and provides proper training to their park rangers, officers, supervisors and executives.
The DOP operates the New York State Zone 3 Police Training Academy, which serves the law enforcement communities of Westchester and Putnam Counties including municipalities within them. The Academy provides a 20-week Basic Recruitment School for entry-level and in-service training to police and peace officers.
The Police Academy also offers courses designed to develop or enhance specialized skills for executives, veteran police and peace officers including counter terrorism, incident command system, fraudulent documents, law enforcement prevention and deterrence of terrorist acts and critical Incident Management.
The DOP has been accredited by the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council since 1992.
